KANHA NATIONAL PARK - The abode of Mowgli, Sher Khan & Baghera

The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines of Kanha provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel "Jungle Book". Spread in a horse shoe shape, Kanha NP is located in Banjar & Halon valleys in Mandla & Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh. Kanha NP covers area of 1949 sq. km. in total which comprises core zone (National Park) of 940 sq. km. and buffer zone (Multiple use area) of 1009 sq. km.... The romance of Kanha National Park has not reduced over time - it is still beautiful and mystic.

Huge grass lands & meadows like Sondar, Bishanpura etc... and rivers like Banjar & Hallon, flowing through the park, makes Kanha NP one of the most picturesque parks. One feels as if heaven is here on every next moment . Kanha continues to sway the imaginations of visitors and is considered as the most scenic and well-managed National Park in Asia.... infact the rich bio-diversity of Kanha inspired the famous & legendary Naturalist George Schaller to study the big cat here.

Some of the important places to see in Kanha;
  • Bamni Dadar - A highly recommended place in Kanha, also known as sunset point. Highest point, offering awesome view of the vast forest.
  • Sonf Meadows - Area dominated by Barasingha (Hard ground Swamp Deer).
    The thick and extensive cover of tall grasses protect the Barasingha fawns from predators.
  • Kanha Meadows -The Kanha Meadows is one of the most popular place in Kanha. The large meadows attract herds of herbivores, that in turn attract carnivores.
  • Sravan Tal - Legend has it that Raja Dashrath of Ayodhya shot an arrow while hunting deer and accidently killed a young man called Shravan, who was out collecting water for his aged, blind parents. The good king had mistaken him for a deer drinking at the lake..... and rest is Ramayan..

Kanha's flora, or plant life, is the underpinning of the park's entire ecosystem. Tigers could not live here without prey, such as chital, sambar, wild boar, and barasingha. These animals, in turn, could not subsist without the forage that the plant life furnishes them. Langurs, sloth bears, and birds depend on fruits, flowers, nectar, and forbs for survival.

Fauna : Mammals - Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Gaur or Indian Bison, Barking Deer, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Wild Boar, Four-Horned Antelope, Wild Dog , Langoor, Nilgai, Marsh Crocodile are the ones which you can come across in this Tiger Reserve. Ratel, Flying Squirrel, Palm Civet, Indian Civet, Leopard Cat, Rusty Spotted Cat, Pangolin and Jackal are nocturnal and hence rarely sighted....

However, if one animal species were to represent Kanha, it would probably be the Barasingha, or the swamp deer. The Barasinghas at Kanha are unique, being the hard ground variety, which populate the large open tracts of grass amidst the forests of teak and bamboo. Twenty years ago, the Barasingha was faced with extinction but some desperate measures including the fencing-off of some animals helped save them and again the air in Kanha bugle with their rutting calls.

Fauna : Birds - Oriental Honey & White-eyed Buzzard, Indian Pitta, Paradise Flycatcher, Indian Roller, Orange-headed Ground Thrush, Common Hawk Cuckoo, Changeable Hawk eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Savana Nightjar, Indian Roller, Painted Sandgrouse, Black-hooded Oriole, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Monarch Flycatcher, Racket-tailed and White-bellied Drongo, Large Cuckooshrike, Oriental White eye, Grey Hornbill, Grey & Red Jungle-fowl, Golden Oriole, Large green Barbet, Leafbirds, several species of Owls..... and a wide variety of birds that are easy to watch and photograph..... summer is also the time when birds would be in their full breeding grandeur.
